There are those who love me (wife and kids) who say that I'm a few sandwiches short of a full picnic basket; however, the story that you can read by clicking-on the tag line that I've included below is revolting to me and the majority of folks reading this email (I hope).

Why is the FBI currently collaborating with ISNA on FBI training manuals when ISNA was named as an "unindicted co-conspirator" in the Holy Land Foundation terror trial by federal Judge Jorge Solis? Judge Solis named ISNA and 263 other organizations and individuals to his list after hearing FBI wiretaps and sworn testimony by FBI agents in the HLF terror trial. The wiretaps and testimony showed linkage from ISNA to Hamas, a well known terror organization responsible for the killing of at least 17 Americans and countless Jews.

The treason starts at the very top of our government with Obama having gleefully invited Mohammed Magid, current President of ISNA, to the White House for the annual Iftar dinner at the end of Ramadan in 2011. This event followed Magid's attendance, at the invitation of the President, to Obama's "Borders" speech at the State Department in 2011. In what can only be called a shred of decency, Obama's staff cleaned-up the "official" list of Iftar dinner attendees by erasing Magid's name from the guest list issued to the press. Can Obama really show embarrassment? The fact that a pig like Magid was eating in the same White House that was home to so many great U.S. Presidents is enough to make even the casual observer aware of the depth of Obama's corruption. Obama can regard any of America's enemies as just another "political special interest group" worthy of the President's favor in exchange for that ever-flowing Saudi campaign cash.

What do our elected leaders at the state level in VA do with this information? After all, many of the ISNA facilities and personnel are domiciled in VA. The answer is pretty short: NOTHING. VA Governor Bob McDonnell told me it would be the concern of AG Ken Cuccinelli. Cuccinelli told me this wouldn't fall in his jurisdiction. When will our governor and AG feel like roping-in terrorists does fall in their universe? Will it be after another attack on VA soil like at the Pentagon? How about an assault on a mall or a middle school? How much campaign money have both the Governor and the AG taken from Saudi sources? Simple answer: a bucket load. I guess that lust for political power can really skew your decison making process?

We can not tolerate leaders on a national, state or local level who have been corrupted by foreign oil money. The sooner everybody wakes up to the fact that cleansing our government of corruption is priority number one, the sooner we avoid a catastrophic event rising from this cesspool.

The level of corruption within the FBI is stupefying! At least the government "promoted" the FBI's Assistant Director, Miller, who was calling CAIR people to warn them before there was to be a raid on CAIR facilities. Where is Miller now? Oh, he's got an even bigger job within the DHS apparatus. Aren't you glad you know that your taxes will support him for the rest of his (and your) life?

Guess how Miller started his career in law enforcement? Miller gained fame by an interview that he did with Usama Bin Laden way back in the day when Miller was a CBS correspondent. Yeah, that's right, a reporter. He was somehow picked-up as an aid to the police chief of LA and parlayed that job into one at the FBI. I guess if meeting UBL made Miller a terrorism expert, then I must be a rocket scientist after all those bottle rockets I fired-off as a kid on the Fourth of July.

All this idiotic goings-on will be regarded with disgust when the hammer falls this spring in the Middle East and the attacks on malls and middle schools begin happening. Who will the politicians and the FBI blame then? They can't blame the Muslims because Islam is a non-violent religion.

I thought that I was hallucinating when I read a headline on www.theblaze.com:

"Unfortunately, our political system is now not functioning the way it used to …"

The quote was attributed to no less than the one, the only, George Soros, in an interview released today 12 Feb 12. I got to thinking, "Boy, how right you are, Georgie." Let's run down my list and see if our readers can discern the difference between current U.S policy and what we may have expected in the bad, old days:

1. Our President and his AG, Eric Holder, oversee a treasonous program where the ATF sells high powered weapons to Mexican drug cartels. At least one U.S. Border Agent dies and as many as 300 Mexicans are killed with "Fast and Furious" weapons found at crime scenes. Yeah, I'll bet even Carter could have separated the wheat from the chaff on that one.

2. The CIA is tasked to launder money from at least one of the Mexican drug cartels which is kind of odd since our bankers don't launder overseas money coming into the country, do they?

3. Our Defense Department delivers a fully functioning, surveillance drone into the hands of the Iranian mullahs. Nobody's asking and nobody's telling exactly how something like that can occur. There are no self-destruct switches? Or, was the drone supposed to arrive unscathed?

4. I wonder if Reagan would have recruited a lawyer from the Muslim Brotherhood hierarchy to negotiate on our behalf with the Taliban concerning our naked withdrawal from Afghanistan?

5. Would LBJ have flown into Egypt to address the government and demanded that the Muslim Brotherhood be allowed to attend, even though the MB was outlawed in Egypt? Recall that the MB played a major part in the assassination of Anwar Sadat.

6. Would Gerald Ford have run up the national debt by four trillion dollars in three years?

7. If Clinton knew that a man was president of an organization named as an "unindicted co-conspirator" by a federal judge as a result of wiretap evidence in a terror trial, would Clinton have invited him over to the White House for dinner? Would Clinton have invited the same Muslim Brotherhood member to hear a speech at the U. S. State Department in which Israel was told to revert to her 1967 borders?

8. Would Nixon have dealt with an out-of-control Mexican border by posting "No Go" signs in the AZ desert, warning U.S. citizens of guns, drugs and human trafficking? Would he have sued AZ for trying to enforce U.S. immigration laws?

And while I'm at it, when did the U.S. political system become "our political system." Is Soros a U.S. citizen? Believe it or not, he became a U.S. citizen in 1961. Not bad for a self-confessed Nazi collaborator who took particular delight in stripping Jews of their possessions.

Yeah, I'm definitely old school, maybe even a Neanderthal, and I hope to hell I never change.

There are cities in America, Flint, Michigan, comes to mind, that are on a fast track toward a breakdown in civil order. Many Muslims don't come to America to assimilate, they come to colonize.

For years, I have been calling to "raid the mosques" to unearth explosives, illegal weapons (fully auto weapons), ammo, chemical weapons and now, if you believe the Vice-Chairman of the Retired U.S. Border Agent Association, a WMD brought into the country across the southern border.

On Glenn Beck's show last Tuesday night, 7 Feb 12, the Vice-Chairman, a veteran of 26 years on the front lines of the Mexican border, said that a strike force of FBI agents recently went to the border to try to intercept a gang of Muslims transporting a WMD. The agents were too slow and the gang slipped through. That WMD is sitting in the basement of some Mosque in Pittsburgh or Akron ready to be used. Go to www.gbtv.com for 7 Feb to pick-up the video. Beck's interview with the retired agent came in the second hour of the show. Isn't it weird that not one MSM outlet reported this story? I mean, you would have thought that MSNBC or Fox may have wanted to run with the story just to poh-pooh it. Instead, we get nothing. Why?

I believe that when all hell soon breaks loose in the Persian Gulf, the Muslim agents will unleash jihad here IN AMERICA.

It won't be pretty. The brave Muslim jihadists will attack popular malls, middle schools and amusement parks with fully automatic weapons. I wonder if all our wonderfully bought-off politicians here in VA and DC will finally be swept aside and the tables turned on marauding Muslims? Will we have an opportunity to see the virus eradicated? I'm all for a man coming to this country to make a better living for he and his family; but, when he comes here and wants to destroy what I've built for my family, I'm ready to fight.

I think that not only will I get that chance, it's going to be mandatory to survive.

It's difficult to hear Obammie shut-down the construction of the Keystone pipeline, to see him emasculate the drilling program of the oil companies in the Gulf of Mexico during the summer of 2010 and for the remainder of the year, and, finally, to watch him bow to the King of Saudi Arabia and not be able to understand Obammie's game.

It's difficult to know Obammies's past, learning politics at the foot of the throne of Richard Daley of Chicago, without projecting that level of corruption to the Obammie Presidency. Why would a sitting U.S. President refuse to buy and transport oil across America that will be purchased from a friendly country like Canada and help drive down energy prices in the U.S.? Why would that President put the U.S. in the position of buying oil from a Marxist / Socialist kook like Hugo Chavez when the Canadian oil could help lessen our dependence on Venezuelan oil?

Why is the U.S. MSM continuing to ignore the significance of the huge Bakaan oil find in North Dakota and parts of other western states? When asked recently about the oil reserves and potential oil production here in the United States, none other than Steve Forbes replied "More than all the Middle Eastern countries combined!" That's a pretty strong number and visualization, isn't it? Then why do we not get any national TV coverage of this huge new energy source?

There's no coverage of the impact of the new oilfields because this development just does not fit the scenario of Obammie's vision of an America being powered by wind and solar power. Does it matter that Obammie and the liberal, left-leaning media haven't quite figured out how to lift one of those Boeing passenger jets off the ground using solar power? That small fact seems to completely escape their limited intellect; but, I'll just bet you that as I write this sentence, some financial backer of Obammie is forming a LLC for the express purpose of exploring the possibilities of solar power in the airline industry.

Do you want to take a guess on how long it would be before the Department of Energy was panting at the front door of the new enterprise to guarantee some loans for Obammie's political patron? Call the new company Solyndralittle, LLC, and put the U.S. taxpayer on the hook for about a billion dollars of loan guarantees. Now, how much of that billion gets skimmed off the top for kickbacks to the Obammie 2012 campaign? Let's just think in conservative numbers, say 5%? That's an awful lot of TV commercials convincing Americans to give him FOUR MORE YEARS!

Will Obammie get the chance to complete the rape of America? Well, how often have you heard any of the four remaining Republicrats discuss America's energy potential to debunk Obammie's strategy of leaving us dependent on foreign oil? Yep, the media has been right busy with Herman's affairs, Newt's experience at Freddie Mac and Romney's crazy misstatements about not caring about the nation's poor.

I just wonder if any of the four will ever get around to an in depth discussion of "Fast and Furious," the Muslim Brotherhood being feted at the White House or voter intimidation in Philly.

Yeah, in addition to our oil, let's talk about those topics for a while.

I wanted to pass the legislative path details of Bob Marshall's bill along to you. Any of the western VA patriots you reach who are able to break-away to strong arm some delegates on Monday would be helpful to say the least.

The way in which this stagecoach seems to be careening toward the cliff begs for a John Wayne-type character to ride-up, stope the runaway team and save the day. Bob Marshall seems to be doing just that with his bill. Many folks seem to be ignoring that Marshall's bill beats the hell out of a revolt with folks (like me) losing limbs I've had for 60 years and thoughts of a long retirement fading in the gunsmoke! Let's face it, we all know that it's reached that stage, it's just going to take a spark. What that spark may be is open to conjecture; but, an unwarranted arrest of a U.S. citizen by Obammie might just qualify?

Like little Tommy Jefferson said at recess one day, "From time to time the tree of liberty must be watered with the blood of tyrants and patriots." I've been eating a lot of liver lately!

Finally, an actual hearing on eligibility

For four long years, compelling evidence has been available that challenges the constitutional eligibility of Barack Obama to occupy the White House.

In fact, I would say the evidence that he does not meet the simple requirements of the law is overwhelming.

But it was not until Thursday that the evidence – any of it – was heard in a single courtroom in America.

Not until very recently has any of it been examined by any official public proceeding or reviewed by any agency of government.

They say the wheels of justice grind slowly, but this is ridiculous.

The good news for the rule of law is what happened in a Georgia courtroom this week and what is happening in the office of the Maricopa County Sheriff's Department in Arizona. Justice may yet prevail.

In the courtroom of Judge Michael Malihi of the Georgia Office of State Administrative Hearings, sworn testimony was delivered rapid-fire over two hours to the effect that Obama is not qualified to have his name on the 2012 presidential ballot because his father was not a U.S. citizen, which precludes him from being a "natural-born citizen," a clear, unambiguous requirement of the Constitution.

Obama refused to honor a subpoena to attend the hearing, produce records answering the charges or even send legal representation to dispute the evidence. Instead, they sent a letter to Georgia Secretary of State Brian Kemp suggesting the judge was letting attorneys "run amok."

In response, Kemp warned Obama and his counsel that if they chose not to participate in the proceedings, "you do so at your own peril."

The judge is expected to rule in the case shortly. However, he has little choice but to issue a default judgment in favor of the challenge – potentially removing Obama from the ballot in Georgia in November.

That would be an astonishing development to the major media in this country that have collectively scoffed at and caricatured the notion that there is any doubt as to Obama's eligibility.

And that's not the only eligibility worry for Obama. Sheriff Joe Arpaio's "Cold Case Posse" has been investigating Obama's eligibility for months and is expected to issue preliminary findings soon. This is the very first official law enforcement probe of the evidence.

Unlike the other major contestant in the 2008 election, John McCain, who faced a U.S. Senate investigation over his eligibility, no agency of government, no branch of government – local, state or federal – ever investigated Obama's bona fides to be on the ballot or to serve in the White House, despite the fact that his own life story, as recounted in his autobiography, more than suggests he is not legally qualified.

Then, of course, there's the matter of the much-debated birth certificate – first withheld by Obama for years, then produced just as a book titled "Where's the Birth Certificate?" by two-time No. 1 New York Times bestselling author and WND senior staff writer Jerome Corsi hit the top of the bestseller charts weeks prior to its actual release.

On Tuesday 24 Jan 12 in his "State of the Union" speech, Obammie declared that

"Everybody plays by the same rules."

I thought to myself "Wow, this is neat. Can we turn around the last three years?"

1. Will Obammie's Attorney General, Eric Holder, turn himself in to U.S. Marshalls to face murder charges for the death of Border Agent Brian Terry?

2. Will Patrick J. Cunningham, chief of the Criminal Division of the U.S. Attorney's Office in AZ, give Congress the details of "Fast and Furious" and not "plead the fifth amendment" as he has sworn to do?

3. Will the U.S. withdraw its recognition of Muslim Brotherhood mouth piece, Yusuf al Qaradawi, as our representative in talks with the Taliban over our surrender in Afghanistan?

4. Will the U.S. State Department reverse course in Egypt and recognize the Egyptian military as perhaps our last chance to keep Israel's neighbors from touching-off a regional war breathless in its chaos?

5. Will Obammie quit granting loan guarantees to "green energy" companies that are doomed to failure just to get the campaign cash that flows back to him through these bogus loans?

6. Will we secure our borders and quit inviting Iranian secret police to establish arms and explosives caches well inland in preparation for "hammer time?"

7. Will we turn away the 47% of Americans who pay no income tax and say "Sorry, no pay, no vote?"

8. Will our DoJ and spineless VA state politicians agree to raid the Muslim terror training camp in Red House, VA, and move on all the "unindicted co-conspirators" from the Holy Land Foundation terror trial whom are living in VA?

Sadly, the answer to all these questions is a deafening "No." Obammie's promise of a level playing field ended in less than 12 hours when his attorney failed to produce the President to honor a subpoena in state court in GA. Obammie is being hauled into court to challenge his legitimacy to be President.

"Everybody plays by the same rules" seems to have its limits!

FAIR TAX Anyone?

It's difficult to imagine that, contrary to the 2008 campaign, not one of the Republicrat candidates for President has adopted the FAIR TAX as their own solution to the economic malaise that is chocking the life out of our economy.

Back in 2008, Mike Huckabee "got it." Huckabee realized that the FAIR TAX would energize the economy by creating certainty in the minds of entrepreneurs and established businessmen and women. Current tax rates and provisions are open to "negotiation" by powerful political lobbyists and politicians. With the lobbyists come heavy campaign contributions. No politician likes to give-up power. It's as simple as that. Does it matter that the country would thrive? Hell no or the FAIR TAX would have already been adopted.

And remember when you hear his "State of the Union" speech" tonight, Obammie will be calling for more taxes on the 53% of us schmucks who still pay taxes. The other 47% don't care if taxes go up because they pay no federal income tax. We're at a tipping point, folks. The inmates are running the asylum.

It's actually funny (if it wasn't so tragic) to listen to the current crop of candidates discuss their plans for resuscitating the economy. Romney's plan is over 50 pages long. Thanks for nothing, Mitt. The solution takes only three words: THE FAIR TAX.

Herman Cain's "9, 9, 9 Plan" was catching fire because it was simple, direct and effective; but, that's not all that was flaming. Herman had to bow out but it wasn't because his economic plan didn't make sense.

Can we look for some progress on the tax issue and coherent plans for rescuing our ailing economy? Not when the candidates can use the media to focus our attention on Newt's courtship of his third wife or Romney's venture capital background.

New Low Point for Obama

It is difficult to imagine an administration so inept and corrupt as the bunch of Chicago gangsters we have had the displeasure to see ruining our country over the last three years.

Obama and his minions have sued states for carrying-out federal immigration law, halted the trials of accused Muslim terror conspirators, failed to assist the rioters in Iran, given huge loan guarantees to insolvent "green" companies who were cronies of Obama, failed to approve the Keystone pipeline, punished the oil drilling industry in the Gulf of Mexico, turned the bankruptcy laws on their heads, begun negotiations with Muslim terror organizations over Egypt's future and our defeat in Afghanistan, and on and on and on.

But, nothing compares with the treasonous behavior of Obama, Eric Holder and the so-called U.S. Department of Justice in the scheme that we all know now as "Fast and Furious." There have been denials, cover-ups, accusations and more denials; but, this past week marked a new low in the corruption run wild in the Obama-led DoJ.

The chief of the Criminal Division of the U.S. Attorney's Office in AZ is refusing to testify before a Congressional committee that has subpoenaed him to testify about "Fast and Furious." Some 2,000 high-powered weapons were allowed by the ATF to be sold to the Zeta and Sinaloa drug cartels with no tracking at all.

In an extraordinary move, Patrick J. Cunningham informed the House Oversight Committee on Thursday, 19 Jan 12, that he would plead the Fifth Amendment rather than give testimony in the death of U.S. Border Agent Brian Terry. Weapons found at the scene of Terry's murder were sold by our ATF to the Mexican druggies!

This is without a doubt the lowest of the low points in the Obama administration. How that scum is allowed to skate through all this treason is as disgusting as it is apparent to anyone with an above-moron IQ.

I guess the indifference shown by the MSM to Obama's crimes really confirms our worst fears about a free press in this country, doesn't it?

Forgive me for not blowing kisses at our State Attorney General, Ken Cucinelli. I know that many of you would kiss his butt if given the chance; but, I see little of true leadership ability and intellect manifest in the man.

Besides not jumping nasty into the middle of the Muslim Brotherhood in VA, witness Cucinelli's latest campaign to avoid allowing VA to be a dumping ground for all the four-legged rats trapped in DC. Some hair-brained politician in DC decided to offer a law that rats were to be trapped and not killed, even going so far to admonish pest control experts to be careful not to break-up family groups. The ordinance passed. Yeah, I know, it says a lot about the impact of government programs that promote folks to their absolute personal pinnacle of stupidlity. How about all the folks who voted for it? Cucinelli has embraced this as his cause celeb and is off to the media races just as he did with the Presidential ballot controversy.

However, a state politician in RI "gets it." Put everything of less consequence aside and zero-in on this new, stupid and probably unconstitutional federal law that involves the possible arrest and detention of US citizens without cause. I personally don't think those arrests would happen or you'd hear many breeches across the land slamming shut; but, why sign the damn thing into law in the first place? Save the country all that bloodshed, some of it mine.

So, will the cutest state politician ever listen to the advisors who have been dead-wrong in their advice thus far? Will they tell Ken to continue to vigorously pursue his "No DC Rats in VA" campaign; or, can we look forward to seeing his smiling face in front of reporters explaining in great detail why he has joined RI in their efforts to turn back this bad, federal law?

If I had designs on the VA Governor's mansion, I know what I'd be doing. If Cuccinelli were resolved not to allow the importation of DC's two legged rats into VA, we'd finally be on the same page.

If you're "in" with the Saudi "cash crowd," your trial gets terminated by Eric Holder. Remember the government dropping the case of one of the co-founders of CAIR, Omar Ahmad, back in March 2010? Ahmad was one of the early catches from the evidence presented in the Holy Land Foundation terror trial. When Congressman Peter King got Eric Holder to testify in front of King's committee, Holder basically told King to go pound sand when asked about Ahmad's release. All Holder has to be told is that a man or an organization is a big campaign donor and the doors of the halls of justice become unhinged.

The term "treason" doesn't even begin to describe the actions of Eric Holder or his boss, Barry Soetoro, or whatever name he's using these days. Did you ever wonder if Kennedy, Johnson, Nixon, Ford, Reagan, Clinton or the Bushs were ever known by another name?

How many Americans do you know who have a prior identity?

1. Back in 1961 people of color were called 'Negroes.' So how can the Obama 'birth certificate' state he is 'African-American' when the term wasn't even used at that time?

2. The birth certificate that the White House released lists Obama's birth as August 4, 1961. It also lists Barack Hussein Obama as his father. No big deal, right? At the time of Obama's birth, it also shows that his father is aged 25 years old, and that Obama's father was born in " Kenya , East Africa ". This wouldn't seem like anything of concern, except the fact that Kenya did not even exist until 1963, two whole years after Obama's birth, and 27 years after his father's birth. How could Obama's father have been born in a country that did not yet exist? Up and until Kenya was formed in 1963, it was known as the "British East Africa Protectorate".

3. On the birth certificate released by the White House, the listed place of birth is "Kapi'olani Maternity & Gynecological Hospital ". This cannot be, because the hospital(s) in question in 1961 were called "KauiKeolani Children's Hospital" and "Kapi'olani Maternity Home", respectively. The name did not change to Kapi'olani Maternity & Gynecological Hospital until 1978, when these two hospitals merged. How can this particular name of the hospital be on a birth certificate dated 1961 if this name had not yet been applied to it until 1978?

From Boston to Austin, politicians spend money on fancy white elephants.

For two decades, America's convention center business has been declining, resulting in a nationwide surplus of empty meeting facilities, struggling convention halls and vacant hotel rooms. How have governments responded to this glut? By building more convention centers, of course, financed by debt backed by new taxes and fees on already struggling taxpayers.

Back in 2007, before the recession began, a report from Destination Marketing Association International described America's convention industry as a buyer's market" suffering excess capacity. It's only gotten worse, attracting just 86 million attendees in 2010, compared to 126 million in 2000. Meanwhile, the amount of convention space angling for business has increased to 70 million square feet, up from 53 million in 2000 and 40 million two decades ago.

That's largely because governments refuse to stop making convention centers bigger and hotels even more dazzling, arguing that whatever business remains will flow to the places with the fanciest amenities. To finance these risky projects—which the private sector won't build by itself—cities float debt backed by new taxes and fees on already struggling taxpayers. As Charles Chieppo, a former board member of Massachusetts Convention Center Authority, lamented last year, Logic rarely has a place in the convention business."

Take Illinois, an industry leader,where officials have invested heavily to keep Chicago's McCormick Place, long one of the three most-used centers in the nation, on top. They spent $1 billion in the early 1990s to build a 840,000-square foot expansion financed by fees on auto rentals, a hotel tax and a surcharge on restaurant meals in downtown Chicago. In 2007 they opened a new building, McCormick West, at a cost of an additional $900 million. The result? According to the Chicago Tribune, the center operates at 55% capacity.

Then there's Boston, perhaps the quintessential example of a city that interprets failure in the convention business as a license to spend more on it. Massachusetts officials shelled out $230 million to renovate Hynes Convention Center in the late 1980s. When the makeover produced virtually no economic bounce, officials decided that the city needed a new, $800 million center financed by a hotel occupancy excise tax, a rental-car surcharge, and the sale of taxi medallions. Opened in 2004, that new Boston Convention and Exhibition Center was projected (by consultants hired by the state) to have Boston renting some 670,000 additional hotel rooms annually within five years. Instead, Beantown saw just 310,000 additional hotel room rentals in 2009.

Now Massachusetts officials want to spend $2 billion to double the size of the Boston Convention Center and add a hotel. Of course, they predict that the expanded facilities would bring an additional $222 million into the local economy each year, including 140,000 hotel room rentals. Even with these bullish projections, officials claim that the hotel would need $200 million in public subsidies.

The whole thing is a racket," Boston Globe columnist Jeff Jacoby recently observed. Once again the politicos will expand their empire. Once again crony capitalism will enrich a handful of wired business operators. And once again Joe and Jane Taxpayer will pay through the nose. How many times must we see this movie before we finally shut it off?"

Many times, if officials in Baltimore have their way. Several years ago they built a $300 million city-owned hotel, (the Hilton Baltimore Convention Center Hotel) to boost the fortunes of the city's struggling convention center. Having opened in 2008, the hotel lost $11 million last year. Now the city is considering a public-private expansion plan that would add a downtown arena, an additional convention hotel, and 400,000 feet of new convention space at the cost of $400 million in public money.

The list goes on—everywhere from Columbus, Ohio, to Dallas, Austin, Phoenix and places in between. One problem is that optimistic projections about new facilities fail to account for how other cities are expanding, too. Why did Minneapolis struggle to hit projected targets after it enlarged its convention center in 2002? Other cities expanded right along with us," Minneapolis's convention center director, Jeff Johnson, said this year.

The surest sign that taxpayers should be leery of such public investments is that officials have changed their sales pitch. Convention and meeting centers shouldn't be judged, they now say, by how many hotel rooms, restaurants, and local attractions they help fill. That's narrow-minded thinking," said James Rooney of the Massachusetts Convention Center Authority this year. Instead, as Boston Mayor Thomas Menino has said, expanding a convention center can demonstrate to the world that we have unlimited confidence in our city and what it can do, not only as a convention destination but as the center of the most important trends in hospitality, science, health and education."

This new metric—a city's amorphous brand value—is little more than a convenient way to ignore the failure of publicly sponsored facilities to live up to exaggerated projections. But as far as city officials are concerned, that failure is nothing that hundreds of millions more in taxpayer dollars can't fix.
